Alice Paul, a well-educated Quaker woman born here, was a driving force behind the successful womans suffrage movement from1912-1920 and avidly supported an equal rights amendment until her death in 1977. The Alice Paul Institute, headquartered at Paulsdale, the historic farmhouse on Hooten Road where Paul was born, keeps her legacy of gender equality alive. It strives to shine a light on organizations and historic sites that honor women. Serving as a venue for leadership development programs designed to inspire young people to make a difference in their schools and communities, Paulsdale exemplifies an adaptive reuse of a historic site.
